Gervin’s impressed by Bacup recruits

- STEVE BROWN

BACUP Borough go into their third of four pre-season friendlies on Saturday with a home game against Cheshire side Winsford United.

The two previous warm up games against Avro FC and Chorley FC have been a good test and an opportunity for Brent Peters and David Felgate to take a good look at the new players arriving at the Brian Boys Stadium for the 2022/23 season.

Discussing the preparations ahead of the new season in the North West Counties, Bacup Borough captain Michael Gervin said: “Preparations are going quite well.

“We do have a few players still out with injury at the moment, and also several of the team are away squeezing in their holidays before it all kicks off on the 30th July.”

Gervin isn’t only Borough captain, but also one of the most experienced players in the team having played at this level for well over 10 years, so his knowledge and leadership qualities will yet again be invaluable.

Regarding the new acquisitions that have joined in the summer, Gervin said: “They have been looking really sharp in training.

“A few of them have played at this level before, but at least four or five are coming through from academy football.

“The new coaching staff of Garry Johnston and Nigel Langley have brought some fantastic young players with them from their previous club and it looks like they’re going to be excellent additions to the squad.”

With Winsford United the visitors on Saturday, Borough will be hoping to have more players available for selection with two, possibly three of them returning from holiday.

Borough’s final pre-season fixture is an away trip to South Yorkshire to play Penistone Church FC on Saturday 23rd July.
