Ian dares to bare (his feet) for charity walk challenge

-

A MAN is determined not to allow blisters to defeat him as he prepares to walk barefoot to Bacup for seven miles in a bid to raise vital funds for a mental health community interest company.

Ian Chapman, 61, will be among hardy challengers braving the trip from Burnley with no shoes or socks on his feet to raise money for Casual Minds Matter to help with their running costs.

He told the Free Press: “I am excited to do the walk and I have received so much support.

“The response from the community has been very positive.”

The moulding technician, from Padiham, will begin the challenge at 1pm at St Catherine’s Community Centre where Casual Minds Matter is based in Burnley - along with more than 10 members of the group.

After more than two hours of walking they will finish at The Cornerstone pub on Alma Street in Bacup where they will have a buffet and enjoy entertainment from Manchester-based rock band Second Sun.

Despite already experiencing cuts and large blisters on his feet after eight weeks of training, Ian is still up for the challenge on Saturday, August 20.

He has experience having completed four walks to raise funds for Pendleside Hospice, including 24 peaks in 24 hours at the Lake District and 100k in a day.

Ian said: “I think mental health should be a major focus for councils and local authorities to address.

“We all went through covid and lockdown and there are people suffering from those effects from losing their businesses to breakdowns in relationships.

“Covid broke up social networks and people have found it difficult to rebuild those ties.”

He added: “The people at the centre are so inspirational and open with their stories.

“They have created amazing bonds and good friendships and they really do help one another.”

Casual Minds Matter address everyday problems and worries to wider issues including housing, family difficulties, alcohol and drug abuse, mental health issues and offer free professional counselling.

Initially the group focused on assisting men with their mental health to help tackle the stigma surrounding male mental health but they have expanded their services to women.

Public donations have already helped him exceed his target of £300, accumulating a total of more than £400 on his GoFundMe page.
