BOOK OF THE MONTH The 50 Greatest Rugby Players of All Time

-

HOSE WHO put their head above the parapet by picking their list of top players always incur the wrath of dissenters, but Steven White says he has watched countless hours of footage and stands by his selection.

Unlike some books of its ilk, this one rarely touches on the back stories of the players involved, instead concentrating on the rugby talents which set them apart from the rest.

White describes each man’s playing style and recalls some of their great moments. The level of detail is good and may inspire some readers to look up some video clips themselves to see what all the fuss is about.

TThe author often picks players who introduced a new style of play, such as Grant Fox, Keith Wood and Zinzan Brooke. He delights Wales fans by reminding them of JPR’s 100% record against England, but won’t endear himself to Scots as just one of their countrymen makes the top 50.

White’s favourites include Richie McCaw, Gareth Edwards, David Campese, Brian O’Driscoll, Martin Johnson, Philippe Sella and Joost van der Westhuizen. Who is his number one? You’ll have to read the book to find out. RW Rating ✪✪✪✪✪ Icon Books, £8.99
