Thrill of Lions tour can’t be matched

- Owain Jones, Editor

the pull of the lions never ceases to enthrall. to see thousands of fans draped in red or fancy dress in New Zealand, singing, drinking and mixing with locals, is nothing short of awe-inspiring.

this time out, supporters have travelled more than 11,000 miles to see a team thrown together weeks before the tour to pit their wits against the world’s most dominant team. Crazy? You betcha, but our game continues to be richer for it – and not just in monetary terms.

to celebrate, in this issue we’ve dug deep into the soul of the lions to see what binds such an emotive concept, speaking to the key individuals who allow the mammoth tour to operate so seamlessly. plus, we lay out plans for future tours.

the first test conjured up one of the great tries from sean O’Brien, one that is sure to be replayed infinitum regardless of the result.

Whatever your allegiance, you cannot fail to admire a country of only 4.5m people who continue to set the global standard of a sport that consumes them. the all Blacks are a joy to behold, able to alter a game’s course through grit, guile and glorious skill.

It’s not hyperbole to say they are a genuine sporting wonder – but so is the wondrous lions spectacle.

enjoy this lions-packed issue!
