WITH only one month to go until one of the most important General Elections, Get Surrey is launching a campaign to encourage young voters to go to the polls.

Prime Minister Theresa May called the snap election, saying she wanted a mandate to deliver the Brexit negotiations to take us out of the European Union.

The vote will be key for the young generation as this will define what relationship the UK wants with the EU and the rest of the world.

Get Surrey is launching #myvote, a campaign to encourage young people to register to vote and cast their ballot on June 8.

We will be joining up with our sister titles across the South East – in Hertfordshire, Essex, Kent and Cambridge – as part of a concerted effort to get young voters to the polling stations.

It can be said that in this digital age, the views of young people are better reflected on social media than in a polling station and this was reflected in the online reaction to the Brexit vote.

Research after the referendum found that about 64% of registered voters aged 18 to 24 went to the polls but 90% of over-65s voted.

However, Brexit is only one of the major issues that will be affecting young people in the UK.

From difficulties with getting on the housing ladder to rising university fees, there is plenty on the agenda for the younger generation to get out and vote.

Get Surrey will be running a series of articles and events in the countdown to the election, aimed at encouraging young people to vote.
