Animal Rescue with Marion Garnett

Dedicated animal expert MARION GARNETT, founder of the Ealing Animal Charities Fair continues her column

SOMEONE’S just told me they went on Rameses Revenge at Chessington yesterday. I was shocked.

They are not normally the sort of person to go on a theme park ride that spins you upside down then drenches you with water. But occasionally it’s good to surprise people (and also ourselves) with what we do.

If you feel like surprising people, Mayhew are seeking volunteers to take up the challenge to abseil down the UK’s tallest sculpture, the Arcelormittal Orbit at the Olympic Park on June 23. Called Abseil for the Animals, Mayhew is asking for a £30 registration fee and that participants raise £250 for Mayhew.

If you’d like to help this unique centre which carries out animal rescue work in this country and abroad, details are available from events@mayhewanimalhome.org.

It’s not just abseiling that brings us down to earth, it can also be more mundane matters such as the realisation that however hard we try, we’re not going to get on with everyone – that can bring us down to earth with a bump. Tarka has learnt that lesson the hard way.

She was brought to Mayhew by her previous owner in December as she didn’t get on with the family dog. For years, she had been living in a separate part of the house to the dog but imminent building work meant the two animals would have to live in close proximity.

It was therefore decided the best option would be to give Tarka up for adoption. She is currently living with one of Mayhew’s foster carers who says, since being in foster care, Tarka has become more relaxed. If you don’t have a dog and are interested in adopting the gorgeous Tarka, see themayhew.org or call 020 8962 8000.

Sometimes a dog and cat can live amicably together. Blue Cross sets out six stages that may be useful if you are trying to introduce a cat and dog that you want to live together. Precautions include ensuring you don’t get scratched by the cat in the process and being aware that some breeds (such as greyhounds) need extra caution. To see the steps go to bluecross.org.uk

Meanwhile, Mayhew is preparing for their fantastic Open Day on Sunday May 13, 11am-4pm, which takes place at Trenmar Gardens, Kensal Green. Put the date in your diary now, more details later.
