Anyone who grew up during the early 1980s will remember the US TV comedy series Dukes of Hazzard and its iconic car, a modified Dodge Charger named General Lee.
Today, however, General Lee and the Confederate flag emblazoned on the car’s roof are rather more controversial.
Many in the US regard the flag as a sign of oppression and racism because of its links to slavery, and in some places in America flying one is actually banned.
General Robert E Lee, who during the US Civil War flew the flag, holiday to a remote Norwegian lodge. Their destination was not the usual luxury getaway one might expect, but instead a relatively basic waterfront cabin available to rent on Airbnb. Tromvik Lodge, on a remote island to the west of Tromsø in northern Norway, above the Arctic Circle, was the Confederacy’s most famous military figure, but ultimately its most disastrous after his crushing defeat at the Battle of Gettysburg. Lee was brought up in Alexandria, south of the US capital of Washington, DC and lived in a rented property with his family has four bedrooms and two bathrooms.
The lodge is popular with tourists from around the world for the whales that breach in the nearby fjord, the frequent Northern Lights to be seen in the area, plus the nearby snowcapped mountains.
The idyllically located cabin is available for £304 a night, including hot tub, internet, indoor fireplace and TV.
