What’s in a name? Marion McMullen looks at some of the worst cases of mistaken identity

VIEWERS were quick to point out Jonathan Ross’s blunder on ITV The Masked Singer at the weekend when the presenter, left, suggested that the mystery daisy flower singer was Natalie Cole, daughter of legendary jazz musician Nat King Cole. The problem being that Grammy Award winner Natalie passed away in 2015. ITV later apologised saying: “This was a genuine mistake by the panel.” THE BBC also had to apologise this week after it wrongly used footage of American basketball star LeBron James in a report about the tragic helicopter death of retired NBA legend Kobe Bryant, pictured. The broadcaste­r later blamed “human error” for the mistake.

SCOTTISH singer Lewis Capaldi, below, suffered a case of mistaken identity at the Grammys on Sunday. He was nominated for the Song of the

Year award, but was mistaken for a humble seat-filler. He put out a string of crying laughing emojis on Twitter after revealing how one lady thought “I was one of the people who sits in the chairs to fill them when someone gets up to use the bathroom.” A PRESENTER on BBC News 24 ended up literally interviewi­ng the wrong guy on live TV in 2006. Taxi driver Guy Goma ended up in front of TV cameras after he was mistaken for technology expert Guy Kewney... who was waiting in reception. The cabbie was there for a job interview and the look of sheer terror as he was interviewe­d still rates as telly blunder gold. BBC Breakfast presenters Rachel Burden and John Key thought they were sitting down to talk to British climber and former soldier Leslie Binns about scaling Mount Everest in 2017, only to find their studio guest was actually political expert Dr Todd Landman. “I think you’ve got the wrong guest,” he told them.

BBC Radio 4 PM show host Evan Davis recently suffered an on-air blunder after being put through to the wrong Robert Shapiro for a segment about TV cameras being allowed into UK courts. The presenter said he was “mortified” after realising he was not speaking to OJ Simpson’s defence lawyer but to another American who shares the same name.

Laughter could be heard in the background as an amused Mr Shapiro said: “You called the wrong Robert Shapiro.” PORTUGUESE broadcaste­r RPT1 mixed up British Prime Minister David Cameron and Titanic film director James Cameron, below, during a news report about Europe and put up a picture of the Oscar winner over a caption saying ‘Avoid

ITV News had to apologise in 2015 when it accidental­ly showed footage of TV chef Ainsley Harriott, below, in a segment about comedian Lenny Henry, top, receiving a knighthood. ITV apologised to both men and blamed the blunder on an error in the production process. 9 DYNAMITE inventor Alfred Nobel found himself reading his own obituary in 1888, when his brother Ludvig died and a French newspaper printed details of the wrong Nobel.

The headline read ‘The Merchant Of Death Is Dead’ and the damning report so appalled the Swedish inventor that he decided to use part of his vast wealth to found the Nobel Prize.
