OFFICERS USED CCTV IMAGES FROM PAWNBROKERS
A WEST London burglar who stole jewellery from a home and tried to sell it to a pawnbrokers has been jailed.
Daniel McEwen was spotted by police acting suspiciously in Hayes last March, when he tried to hide from officers.
The 26-year-old, of Yew Avenue, Yiewsley, was searched and found to be in possession of a drawstring bag containing a quantity of jewellery, along with a screwdriver and a receipt from a local pawnbrokers for £300.
McEwen was unable to account for the items and he was arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods.
When officers visited the pawnbrokers store, they obtained CCTV footage showing McEwen selling several items of jewellery that same day.
McEwen was interviewed and charged with handling stolen goods and going equipped for theft. He was remanded to Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court on March 20 and was bailed by the court until May 14.
Detectives leading the investigation identified a residential burglary that had been reported to police only a matter of hours before McEwen was stopped.
The victim confirmed that jewellery found on McEwen had been among the items stolen from their home.
Officers returned to the pawnbrokers and seized the remainder of the jewellery that McEwen had sold before returning the items to their owner.
CCTV footage showed McEwen committing the burglary. He was wearing the same clothing in which he had been stopped and arrested.
McEwen failed to appear at court on May 14 and police launched a manhunt to find him. It was not until September 5 that he was located and arrested.
He was charged with burglary and remanded to Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court on September 6 where he pleaded guilty.
McEwen was jailed for two years and six months at Isleworth Crown Court on January 28.
