Depaz Rum’s journey
Preserving its homeland is vital to this Martinique distiller
Depaz rums have evolved from the unique terroir of Mount Pelee, where its sugarcane is grown. There’s a slice of history in every single glass – each drop boasts flavours sourced from Martinique’s tropical climate, its clear mountain spring water and its rich volcanic soil.
The brand’s success is down to the courage of its extraordinary founder, Victor Depaz. In 1902, Victor lost his family when Mount Pelee erupted. After at first fearing he was ruined by the loss of the family estate, he decided to face his troubles head on and returned to his land to rebuild everything from the ground up.
This spirit of endurance and tenacity has shaped everything Depaz stands for.
Beyond our willingness to face and overcome difficulties, we also boast a huge ability to adapt and learn, which has only grown over the years.
We are still overcoming adversity today, be it facing ecological or economic issues, never more so than in face of the global pandemic. But one thing never wavers – we have a deep and intimate knowledge of our land’s unique ecological make-up and we will do everything we can to protect it.
Our estate adapts to stand the test of time with agility and elegance, as resilient as the terroir from which its spirits draw their characteristics.
Depaz is committed to the protection and development of the unique landscape where its sugarcane is cultivated. Sustainable development is at the heart of its values.
We carefully alternate our crops to ensure maintenance of the soil’s richness, we’ve stopped using fungicides and pesticides and we recover 100 per cent of our cane residues in compost or energy. We’ve also reduced our water consumption by more than half over the past 10 years.
Proud to carry on the work of our founder, we want to ensure the land that’s so precious to Depaz and so vital for our planet is preserved for generations to come.
