THREE projects have been awarded a share of a £110,000 fund from the Merseyside Recycling And Waste Authority (MRWA).

The total pot was divided among 10 schemes.

They included Halton Play Council, which operates a re-use and children’s play resource centre on Mersey Road in Runcorn.

The ‘Scrapstore’ is open to the general public and community groups and supports the work of a charity for youngsters.

Joyce Reilly, Halton Play Council manager, said she was delighted that the project had been awarded cash.

The grant will promote the Scrapstore and encourage more donations of reusable items, such as toys, furniture and textiles.

Volunteers will be trained in the collection, repair and retail of these resources.

Mersey Waste Munchers, run by the Children’s Food Trust, will set up clubs for young adults aged 16-25 and provide a twoday course to pass on skills and support to establish cookery clubs that focus on reducing food waste.

They will receive funding, training and printed resources to teach others how to change their food waste behaviour.

Faiths4Change will hold workshops to teach residents how to spruce up unwanted furniture and textiles, while creating artwork to be exhibited in Liverpool next spring.

The projects have been awarded up to £25,000 for schemes that cover Merseyside and Halton, and up to £8,000 for those at local authority level.

Cllr Graham Morgan, MRWA chairman, said: “We’ve made this money available for projects which can have an impact on their local community and make Merseyside and Halton a cleaner and greener place for us all to live and work.

“Giving groups the opportut nity to get involved in looking after their environment can only bring benefits to all and can help us appreciate items as valuable resources rather than something which otherwise might be just thrown away.”
