Young carers get creative

AGROUP of young carers from Halton attended a graffiti workshop day which enabled them to express themselves in a creative way.

Ten young people aged between 10 and 18 were invited to create three giant murals on canvasses to help launch Halton’s Young Carers Strategy 2016-19.

A Halton Council spokesman said that the artwork ‘captures what it means’ to young people in the borough who have a caring role.

The images created by the carers can be found throughout the latest Halton Borough Council Young Carers’ Strategy, which launched during Carers’ Week.

Cllr Tom McInerney, executive board member for children, young people and families, said: “Halton young carers are important young people in our community all too often overlooked.

“Many have accomplished great achievements but as a group they remain vulnerable to low school attendance, low school attainment, poor health and restricted access to the opportunities available to other young people without a caring role.

“Halton Borough Council and all the agencies working with young carers aim to ensure that a young person’s caring role is not excessive, inappropriate or unsafe.”

The newly-released strategy is designed to help young carers, their families and professionals by co-ordinating services and raising awareness for young carer issues and the impact that having a caring role can have upon young people.

Working with partners, the strategy acts as a guide to make it easier for young carers to access the support they need when they need it.
