Former Red Burns signs Town deal

-

RUNCORN Town manager Chris Herbert has continued to shape his new-look squad ahead of the 2016-17 Hallmark Security League season with the capture of former FA Youth Cup winner Michael Burns from Gap Connah’s Quay.

Burns started his career at Liverpool where he starred in midfield, winning six caps for England U16s including a goal on his debut against Wales.

He also won the FA Youth Cup twice in 2006 and 2007 before moving on to Bolton Wanderers where he was a regular in their reserve-team.

His Football League debut came for Carlisle United against Walsall in 2009 before he drifted into non-League football with spells in the Football Conference at Newport County, Guiseley and Vauxhall Motors.

The last couple of seasons has seen Burns play at Gap Connah’s Quay in the Welsh Premier League where he helped them into Europe for the first time in their history where they will compete in the UEFA Europa League.

It is a real coup for Town to attract a player of this quality, and at just 27-years-old, club bosses are hopeful Burns will be a real favourite amongst the supporters at Pavilions.

Runcorn boss Herbert was ecstatic at the signing.

He said: “Burnsey is a quality midfielder. His distribution and his reading of the game are different class.

“He is a leader on the pitch, and won’t let anyone slacken their game around him.

“He is a local lad who actually lives in Runcorn, and it was a big factor that he wanted to play for his hometown club.”

Added Herbert: “Michael just wants to play football and is as hungry as ever to play.”
