MP backs May in race for leadership
EAST Runcorn MP Graham Evans has announced he is backing Theresa May in the Conservative leadership race.
Mr Evans revealed on his Facebook page that he was to throw his support behind the Home Secretary.
The Weaver Vale MP, whose constituency covers much of east Runcorn, Frodsham, Daresbury and Northwich, said he had taken feedback from his constituents in making his decision.
Mr Evans and Mrs May both backed the Remain campaigns in the EU referendum, although Mr Evans gave no indication whether this was a factor.
He said Britain faces a ‘new chapter’.
Mrs May faces Tory leadership rivals Stephen Crabb, Liam Fox and Michael Gove.
In a surprise move, Boris Johnson ruled himself out of the race on Thursday, June 30.
Chancellor George Osborne has also said he will not compete.
Mr Evans said: “I believe Theresa May has the necessary experience and leadership skills to make a highly effective Prime Minister in these ever changing times.
“She has an excellent record as Home Secretary and I know will work to unite the country moving us forward to ensure Britain faces the challenges which lie ahead and crucially, grasps the opportunities the future holds.
“Yes there is uncertainty, but it is also full of opportunity and I shall carry on doing everything within my power to ensure the people of Weaver Vale – families and businesses – continue to thrive.”
