‘Big cats’ battle decided by just two chalks
ON the league front in the Runcorn & District Bowling Association, Pavilions ‘A’ took on the unbeaten Tigers Head at Sandy Lane with the Tigers roaring louder than the Lions running out the winners 147-149.
The Lions’ captain thought the game was over after winning three out of the first four and a 20-21 loss.
However, the Tigers’ roar was much stronger in the back four as they also won three of the four games claiming the contest by two chalks.
Second-placed Helsby ‘A’ travelled to take on Halton RBL ‘A’ and came away losing 145-129.
Martin Peers (21-6) and Father Jimmy (21-7) led the way for the Legion with the best reply for Helsby from John Evans (21-9).
Pavilions ‘A’ moved into third place and have a game in hand on Helsby ‘A’ after the rearranged game at Helsby, Pavilions running out the winners 157-131.
The best winners on the night were John Briggs (21-8) and Neal Ocego (21-9).
Section Two leaders Kingsley ‘A’ took on the Young Guns from Helsby ‘D’ and ran out the winners 142-113.
Eric Howman (21-4) and Alf Russell (21-7) led the way for Kingsley with Mike Clarke’s 21-3 the best reply for Helsby.
Second-placed Corporation visited Frodsham Cons and dropped chalks after a 134-121 loss.
Mal Cleworth (21-5) led the way for the Cons with the best reply for the weakened Corporation team from Kevin Marsh (21-9).
Third-placed Kingswood ‘B’ also lost ground on the leaders after a 139-129 loss at Egerton Memorial.
Mike Kinsey (21-6) and Ernie Ellis (21-7) led the way for Egerton and replying for Kingswood were Graham Donnelly (21-6) and Phil Hudson (21-8).
Section Three pacesetters Norton Arms ‘B’ took on second-placed Rock Park ‘A’ and just managed to run out the winners 130-126 in a tough encounter at the Arms.
Neil Scott led the way for Norton (21-3) followed by his brother Keith (21-9).
Barry Hopley’s 21-8 was the best reply for Park.
Having played their outstanding fixture, Castle Park ‘B’ moved into third place despite losing 149-141 against Rock Park ‘A’.
Bottom Team Helsby ‘B’ continue to struggle after losing at home 151-115 against Halton RBL ‘B’.
The best win for Helsby came from Heather Ross (21-6) with the best replies for Halton from Mike Ellison (21-8) and Peter Hollet (21-9). ● The Grapes Inn in Halton Road has been chosen to hold a quarter-final of the Cheshire Brunner Cup on Saturday.
The two teams involved are Gladstone Libs and Castle Private. The game starts at 2.30pm. ● The Ray Worthington Mixed Pairs will also be held at the Grapes Inn over the weekend of July 16-17.
