HFH U11 24 Wigan St Patrick’s U11 28 THE U11s from Halton Farnworth Hornets and Wigan St Patrick’s produced a cracking end-to-end game with the visitors just taking the honours.
Falling behind to an early score, Hornets hit back with man-of-the-match Conall Slavin crashing over in the corner.
St Pat’s then took an 18-6 lead with two quick tries, but Hornets responded with a good solo try from Joey Nulty.
Hornets got on top at the start of the second half with Flynn Carney collecting a crossfield kick from Peter Scott to make it 18-18.
St Pat’s scored again before Hornets hit back via Tom Hussey catching another kick from Scott to edge them in front at 24-22.
Unfortunately for Hornets, St Pat’s had the last word with a late try to take the spoils 28-24.
Elliott Droogan was named top tackler and the coaches’ award went to Jack Craig.
HFH U13 6 Wigan St Patrick’s U13 4 A SCORELESS first half highlighted the quality of defence from both teams who fought hard to make progress in the Lancashire Cup.
A tense second half proved equally close with the deadlock broken by the Wigan outfit who took a narrow lead with an unconverted try.
Tough tackling from Halton kept them in contention, Matthew Doyle putting in an excellent shift to help keep Pats on the back foot.
An Alex Sutton break supported by a calm conversion under pressure from Marco Williamson was just enough to edge the Hornets through to the next round.
