Unadulterated UK democracy
THE referendum was one of those occasions when we caught a rare sight of unadulterated democracy at work, but the political class wasted no time returning to their usual duplicitous ways, plotting their treacherous path towards their own ends.
At the same time, democracy itself takes a bashing, as the following examples will show.
1. There is the petition calling for a second referendum. So, would results taken from two out of three or even the best of five referendums make Remainers happier?
2. When Scotland voted to stay in the United Kingdom, there was no mention of a ‘The UK to stay in the EU or else’ clause. So there is no reason for their First Minister to throw a tantrum over Brexit.
3. Elected as party leader less than a year ago with a large mandate, Jeremy Corbyn is also supported by representatives from 10 of the biggest unions in the country. I think the Blair/ Brown leftovers of the PLP are not doing their careers and their party’s future any favours in their attempt to dislodge him with such a crude and undemocratic coup.
4. Listening to some of the truly abrasive comments about the UK from EU leaders at their post-Brexit meeting, most of them did not even bother to mention the democratic process by which the UK came to the decision of leaving the union.
Whether they like it or not, our politicians must be willing to adapt to the new political landscape that was chosen by the majority. Name and address supplied
