Activity area spruced up

- BY JOHN MCDOUGALL

JOINERY students have helped create new outdoor activity areas at a Widnes primary school.

Riverside College was approached by Metsa Wood on Ditton Road regarding a project at St Michael’s Catholic Primary School.

The school had been awarded a small grant to develop their outdoor area and had plans to create a bridge to access a reading space, a decking area for class activities and a meeting room for pupils.

A college spokesman said that Riverside was ‘delighted’ to help with the project, and supplied the knowledge and labour necessary to make the plans a reality.

Metsa Wood agreed to support the project with all of the timber materials required, and Widnes company Jefferson Civil Engineering provided labour to complete the ground work.

College tutors John Wardropper and Paul McNally designed the bridge, with the frame built at Riverside’s workshop by joinery students.

Level 1 students completed the bridge decking and the Level 3 students completed the finishing touches by making and fitting hand rails, with the structure carefully dismantled before being transported to St Michael’s.

The students also installed a ‘graffiti wall’ on the outdoor fence from large timber sheets and the school has employed an artist who will now paint artwork on the sheets.

Riverside joinery tutor John said: “This is an excellent opportunity for our students to put into practice the skills and knowledge they have developed during their time with us.

“As a college it is very important that we work with local businesses and local schools; it not only supports and develops our students, but highlights the great community work our college completes.”
