Superb defence is the key to success as Hornets U11s do stop Clock

-

HFH U11 10 Clock Face U11 0 THE U11s from Halton Farnworth Hornets brought the curtain down on the first part of the season with a fine display of rugby league in front of a big crowd at Wilmere Lane on Thursday evening.

Both sides gave their all in attack and defence with the game flowing from end to end.

But it was the Hornets’ tremendous watertight defence that won them the contest with all players putting their bodies on the line not to let Clock Face cross their try-line.

It was coaches’ award winner Zac Marsden with two well-taken tries that sealed the win for the Hornets.

Conall Slavin was named man-of-the-match and the top tackler accolade went to Finnlay Hill.

HFH U10 Reds 6 LM Rangers U10 12 HFH Reds found it hard going at home to a tough and well-drilled Leigh Miners side.

In what was a very tight opening half where defences were on top, it was the away team that were first on the scoresheet with a well-worked try.

Despite their best efforts, Hornets were unable to break through the excellent Leigh defence and they went into the break trailing 6-0.

The second half went much the way of the first and it was Leigh Miners who extended their lead with another try.

To their credit, Hornets never gave up and they scored a consolation try at the end that their persistence deserved, when Riely O’Brien used his strength close to the line to touch down, also adding on the extras.

Man-of-the-match was jointly awarded to Mason Leather for his excellent defence and all-round workrate and also Bobby Finch for the way he controlled the game from the back and great support play.

Top tackler was awarded to Luke Lamey for his outstanding work around the middle of the park and the coaches’ award went to Lewis George for his great distribution and organisational skills throughout the encounter.
