All is ship-shape for young apprentices
TWO apprentices from Riverside College were picked from hundreds of candidates across the country to take part in the annual Apprentice Ship Cup as part of the Liverpool Tall Ship Regatta 2016.
Callum Jones, 19, formerly Wade Deacon High School, and Michael Kemp, 17, formerly of The Prescot School, are both engineering apprentices at Getrag Ford Transmissions in Halewood.
They were nominated by the company to take part as a reward for all of their hard work and progress this year.
A Riverside spokeswoman said the Apprentice Ship Cup is the UK’s largest annual Tall Ships Regatta and provides the chance to challenge and develop participants.
Michael and Callum were chosen to join others to form a crew to sail the Tall Ships for one week.
Callum said: “At first I was excited but apprehensive as I have never done anything like this before, but I had a great week and I would definitely do this again.
“I learned lots and got to meet some great people.
“I enjoyed preparing and serving food and having the opportunity to learn all there is to sailing.”
Matthew said: “I was really excited when I got accepted as I love anything practical.
“I never thought I would get to be a part of something like this.
“It has given me the opportunity to meet new people and develop my team work and life skills which I will be able to apply to apprenticeship.”
