RUNCORN and Widnes have been invited to enter the Government’s Great British High Street competition with prizes of up to £10,000 up for grabs.

Now in its third year, the contest’s aim is to celebrate work to revive, adapt and diversify the nation’s town and village centre thoroughfares.

It is open to local authorities, businesses, community groups and volunteers.

A record-breaking 230 entries were submitted for last year’s competition, attracting more than 200,000 public votes.

Marcus Jones, high streets minister, said he expected more even more contenders in 2016.

Deadline for entries is Friday, September 9.

A Department For Commu- nities And Local Government (DCLG) spokesman said the Government is helping towns and villages to adapt to changes in retail habits with £6.7bn of business rates cuts for 900,000 companies with 600,000 now paying none.

He said high street investment has risen by 30% and the national vacancy rate has fallen to its lowest level since January 2009 and retail sales have increased year-on-year for the longest period on record.

Mr Jones said: “This year’s Great British High Street competition is going to be even bigger and better, with new categories and a simplified entry form.

“I’d urge everyone to get involved to showcase the hard work of your community, in keeping high streets the life and soul of our towns, villages and cities.

“As well as the cash prize, winners will also receive dedicated support and mentoring from industry experts which could range from one to one coaching to advice on digital marketing.

He added: “Internet giant Google’s expert training task force will also provide category winners with training on how to make the most of their digital skills.”
