MPs call for grass roots rugby to be key in bid to host World Cup

- BY OLIVER CLAY

HALTON MP Derek Twigg and city region colleagues Steve Rotheram MP and Marie Rimmer MP have called on the Government to ensure that the grassroots game is at the forefront of England’s Rugby League 2021 World Cup bid.

In a letter to sports minister Tracey Crouch, the MPs welcomed England’s bid to host the 2021 Rugby League World Cup and the Government’s £25m of support but urged the Government to ensure revenues generated are re-invested in grassroots rugby league.

A spokesman for Walton MP Mr Rotheram said the 2013 Rugby League World Cup in the UK was the most financially successful world cup since the tournament’s inception in 1954 and was watched in stadiums across the country by almost half a million spectators.

Marie Rimmer, MP for St Helens South And Whiston, and Mr Rotheram have also signed a motion in Parliament welcoming the bid and urging the Rugby League International Federation to back England’s bid to host the tournament.

Mr Twigg said: “Amateur clubs play a vital role in our communities.

“They have helped launch successful rugby careers, kept young people off the streets and supported people, young and older, wanting to stay fit and healthy.

“I urge the Government to back investment in these community clubs so they too can benefit from this exciting opportunity.”

Ms Rimmer, who is also secretary of the Rugby League Parliamentary Group, said: “MPs from all parties are backing England’s World Cup Bid.

“The plan to host the women’s and wheelchair world cups alongside the men’s tournament is great news for the development of rugby league which is why we must ensure clubs and communities at all levels can benefit from England’s bid.”

Mr Rotheram said: “I’m delighted that Anfield in my constituency will play host to this season’s four nations final, showcasing the very best of rugby league and the importance of the sport to the city region. However, it is vital any successful bid benefits the grassroots clubs at the heart of their communities and not just those clubs at the top of the game.”
