Pupils on fact finding Gateway tour

-

NEARLY 130 students from a Widnes college gained an insight in the latest progress on the Mersey Gateway Bridge.

Saints Peter And Paul Catholic College Year 8 geography students took part in a Bridge To Prosperity event at the Catalyst Science Discovery Centre on Mersey Road in West Bank. The pupils enjoyed a day of workshops and team building, and learned how to tackle the big engineering and environmental challenges involved in bridge building.

They also learned about the Mersey Gateway’s latest progress and developments.

The Bridge To Prosperity day was the first of its kind that the Mersey Gateway team has laid on, and they are now working with other schools and colleges to arrange similar events.

Carolyn Robertson, director of the school’s faculty for humanities, said: “Students are excited about the project because it’s something we can all relate to; we live here and we are witnessing history being made.”

Merseylink, the Mersey Gateway Crossings Board and Mersey Gateway Environmental Trust representatives have also delivered more than 120 hours worth of workshops and presentations in schools and colleges across Halton.

They are continuing to work with them throughout the construction programme, which will run through until autumn 2017, when the new bridge is scheduled to open.

Halton Council leader, Cllr Rob Polhill, added: “It’s fantastic to see local schools getting involved with the project. The Mersey Gateway is more than just a transport scheme, it has become an intrinsic part of our communities and I’m delighted that young people across Halton are being inspired.”
