Gill gets Hornets flying high

-

HALTON FARNWORTH HORNETS 48 LEYLAND WARRIORS 18 HORNETS travelled to Leyland and came away with the points against a team who were level on points with them in the league table.

Playing with a strong wind in the first half it was important that Hornets played sensible rugby to ensure maximum benefit was achieved and that’s exactly what they did.

Hornets took the lead after 15 minutes when quick hands across the backline allowed Mike Gill to dummy over.

On their next set Robbie Conroy raced through from 40 yards and Hornets were in total control. Gill soon added his second and Shaun Mannion crashed over for a fourth try.

Leyland tried a kick through to the line but unfortunately for them Gary Richardson had read the play and recovered the kick before releasing Callum Topping on a 95-yard run to the line.

Topping added his third conversion of the half to put Hornets 26-0 ahead at the break.

As expected Leyland started the second half strongly, crossing for a converted try, but Gary Richardson continued his excellent form with two tries in a couple of minutes and he was followed by Matty Tyrer with a 30-yard finish and a close range effort from captain Danny Mellor.

Leyland scored two late consolation tries.

The result keeps Hornets on the heels of league leaders Pilks who remain in pole position for the title.
