Funeral of incinerator campaigner next week

-

AN ENVIRONMENTAL campaigner from Runcorn who died in a motorcycle collision is to be laid to rest next week.

The funeral of Jeff Meehan, 72, will take place at noon on Friday, September 23 at St Edward’s Church on Ivy Street.

Wellwishers have been asked not to bring flowers and instead make donations to the National Association For Bikers With A Disability.

Mr Meehan died in a collision with a car in Foggs Lane, Antrobus, Northwich, at 10.05am while riding to a vintage motorbike rally on Sunday, September 4.

A statement issued by his family following the collision said that Mr Meehan’s passion in life had been restoring vintage motorbikes.

He will be best known to many residents though for his years of dauntless campaigning against the Ineos Chlor waste incinerator in Weston Point and at public inquiries over heavy goods traffic permitted levels and air pollution monitoring.

His family said that he was a devoted family man and still very active, having only recently retired from playing five-a-side football and still playing table tennis.

He had been married for 50 years and had two daughters.

Tributes poured in on the Weekly News Facebook page.

Claire Williams said: “RIP Jeff I grew up knowing you and how lovely you were.”

Barbara Butler said: “So sad he was a great neighbour.”

Barbara Lloyd said: “Such sad news but died doing something he loved by the sounds of it.”
