Club appoints apprentice

WIDNES Vikings have welcomed their newest apprentice who has fulfilled a childhood dream by joining the club.

Joe Purcell, 17, of Widnes, has been with the club since the start of November 2015.

He has completed a NCFE Level 1 Award In Employabil­ity Skills and then progressed onto a NCFE Level 1 Certificat­e In Employabil­ity Skills in sport.

As well as his studies, Joe volunteere­d working with the Vikings developmen­t squad and supported the Embed The Pathway sessions lead by club’s performanc­e team.

Joe said: “I grew up supporting the Widnes Vikings and always wanted to be involved with rugby, especially Widnes.

“Now I have the opportunit­y to be part of a community sports apprentice­ship at the Vikings, helping out with the projects such as Sky Try, Game Changer, partner schools and the developmen­t squad.”

Joe will be helping out on match days with player mascots, player escorts and the club of the week visits.

A Vikings spokesman said: “All members of the community team would like to welcome Joe and support him on his new journey in black and white.”
