Saturday, September 15 1945 BRAMLEY were beaten 41-2 as the Chemics ran riot after Tommy McCue set up the opening score for Mick Roberts before scoring himself after an outrageous dummy put him clear.

Further tries from Charlie Reynolds who notched a brace and Gus Malone, plus two goals from Colin Hutton, with only a Bramley penalty in reply took the half-time score to 19-2.

Malone, McCue, Roberts, Hugh McDowell, Jimmy Jones and Fred Higgins completed the scoring, with two more conversions from Hutton. ● Widnes Vikings: On This Day is available now at £9.99 from the Vikings Superstore.

Patrick Ah Van looks to get a pass away to a Widnes teammate during last Friday’s clash with the Wolves. WARRINGTON WOLVES ........... 30 WIDNES VIKINGS ...................... 12

AN improved second half showing wasn’t enough as the Vikings went down 30-12 to Warrington Wolves at the Halliwell Jones Stadium last Friday evening.

Denis Betts’s men found a Wolves side with the League Leaders Shield in their sights too hot too handle in the opening period as they conceded three unanswered tries to trail 20-0 at the break. Things might have been different had Widnes taken a couple of gilt-edged early chances of their own but the key passes didn’t stick.

Instead it was Warrington who took control with the outstanding Chris Hill leading the way and the dummy-half running of Brad Dwyer, Matty Russell and Stefan Ratchford constantly bending back the defensive line.

Betts was clearly disappointed in a performance which led to his side’s fourth defeat to the Wolves this season.

He said: “We had two opportunities to score tries before they really got going but we couldn’t get the execution right.

“Charly (Runciman) gets away and Pat (Ah Van) gets away so we could have been 10 points up before they had an opportunity.

“We just looked like a tired side. They rolled us around the ruck, got us going backwards and it was hard to stop them.

“The 20 points they scored in the first half came on the back of some fantastic fight in them to get to their feet at the play-the-ball.

“Ratchford, Russell and Hill just hurt us around the ruck.

“What we wanted to do over this period is compete as if we were going for a finals spot.

“But in this game and the one against Hull we’ve just lacked a little bit of something.

“We’ve got a good turnaround before we play Saints and we’re going to have to pull our finger out to get a victory in our last home game of the season.”

If anything, Widnes looked the sharper of the two sides in the opening exchanges.

Full-back Rhys Hanbury sent Runciman away but couldn’t drag in the return pass with the tryline beckoning.

Ah Van had a chance from a long Hanbury pass but it proved too high for high for him to catch cleanly.

Eventually, it was the Wolves who opened the scoring when Ashton Sims sent fellow prop Hill galloping 40 metres to the posts with the Vikings cover noticeably absent.

Warrington’s quick play-theballs began to take their toll with Widnes constantly back-pedalling. Kurt Gidley added a penalty
