Life changing opportunities

-

A NEW scheme has been launched by Widnes Vikings to help provide support to young people involved in learning opportunities with the club.

The Life Changer initiative has been inaugurated in partnership with Riverside College.

The Vikings Learning Hub was launched in September 2015 as an education centre based at the Select Security Stadium specialising in providing programmes for young people who have left their college course early or have been out of college for some time.

Across the last academic year, 25 learners aged between 16 and 18 completed a Level 1 Award In Employability Skills, whilst 17 learners of the same age completed qualifications in Sport, Employability And Functional Skills across 10 months.

They have since progressed onto further education, apprenticeships, and employment.

For the current academic year, 16 to 24-year-olds are being offered qualifications which will prepare them for the world of work or an apprenticeship by offering a needs led training programme combined with valuable work experience opportunities.

The Vikings are seeking the help of Business Ambassador Network members to provide work experience opportunities for learners.

Vikings community integrated director Richard Munson said: “Last year, with the support of Riverside College, 100% of learners completed qualifications in Sport And Employability whilst many were successful in obtaining relevant functional skill awards.

“This year, we are pleased to be able to fuse our new traineeship programme with our Business Ambassador Network and are confident that many young people will benefit from accessing high quality placements within this group of fantastic businesses.”

As part of the programme, Ambassadors will provide a two day placement for eight weeks whilst the learner will also attend the Vikings Learning Hub for a further day to complete their Employability Skills training.
