Stay secure as nights draw in, police urge

-

POLICE are urging Halton residents to be extra vigilant and security conscious as the nights begin to draw in.

Officers are encouraging people to doublecheck security measures before the clocks go back on Sunday, October 30.

Officers have issued tips which can help prevent residents becoming a victim to thieves.

Supt Bill Dutton said: “As the clocks go back this weekend the nights become darker much earlier and this can often lead to an increase in burglaries.

“We don’t want anyone to fall victim of this invasive crime and so we are urging and reminding residents to follow these simple yet secure and effective steps which can help to reduce their chances of falling victim to thieves.”

Tips include investing in a burglar alarm, ensuring that all windows are closed and locked, or using security measures on modern windows, which allow them to let some air in but still be locked.

Residents are advised to keep external doors secured at all times even when at home, to keep desirable items out of view to passers-by.

Garages and sheds should also be locked with strong padlocks and ideally fitted with an alarm.

People should also consider buying timer switches to turn on table lamps, standard lamps and radios around the home when dark to make it look as if someone is at home.

Other safety measures include installing outside lights, ensuring car keys are not left on view and are kept safe, and making sure that vehicles are locked. ● Anyone who sees somebody acting suspiciously is asked to report it to the police immediately by calling 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
