More time to join big energy switch

THE deadline for Halton residents to take advantage of a collective energy tariff and save money on bills has been extended.

The Merseyside Collective Switch has saved people in the region more than £1m through switching to a cheaper tariff.

Average savings are £311 and the deadline to register is now before midnight on Monday, October 31.

Collective switching works by asking people to register their interest, then uses collective buying power to negotiate exclusive tariffs from energy suppliers.

More than 7,000 people took part in the last round in March, leading to exclusive deals including a fixed tariff from E.on, an offer for payment- on- receipt- ofbill customers, and a special deal for prepayment meter customers.

Previous rounds of the switch have attracted exclusive offers from the large and smaller suppliers, including British Gas, E.on, and Ovo.

Halton Council leader Rob Polhill said: “This is a great deal for Halton residents, in these days of austerity, I would encourage everyone to take advantage of the offer and save cash.”

The scheme aims to make it easier to switch supplier, and advisors are on hand to offer free and impartial help every step of the way.

It is free to join, and there is no obligation to switch once offers are released.

Hay ley McCann, 25, from Widnes, saved £448 through the Merseyside Collect ive Switch. She said: “We had moved into a new property and needed to find a supplier.

“I’d never switched before but by registering for the Collective Switch, the process was easy and I’m happy with the collective prices.”

As well as the Collective Switch offer, participants are welcome to switch to any tariff on the market to find a deal with prices shown against each other for comparison.

Ellie Abernethy has managed the project since its launch three years ago. ●

She said: “One of the main aims of the Collective Switch is to make switching easier, especially for people who are nervous about switching, and those who don’t have internet access and can’t compare prices online.

“If you haven’t switched for more than 12 months, you may be on your supplier’s most expensive tar- iff. Even if you are a regular switcher, our winning tariffs are often market beating and therefore cheaper than you can find elsewhere.

“I hope everyone registers to find out how much they could save”.
