Unbeaten run ends at United

Sandbach United 3

Widnes FC 0 WIDNES FC crashed to a very disappointing 3-0 reverse at Sandbach United on Tuesday night.

It was the club’s first loss since they fell to Chadderton in the FA Vase on September 24, an undefeated run of six matches.

The visitors actually began the brighter and on 10 minutes Matty Rigby saw an effort go wide after good set-up work from Kev Towey.

Soon after, Chris Lomax saw two efforts thwarted by the United keeper while Michael Burke fired one shot over the bar.

Widnes were made to pay for these spurned opportunities when the home side went ahead on the half-hour.

Josh Lane was the man on the mark when a free-kick was nodded back across goal, he fired the ball home at the far post past Widnes keeper Richie Mottram.

Trailing at the interval, Widnes thought they were back on level terms just after the hour but Towey saw his effort ruled out for offside.

Sandbach took full advantage of this piece of fortune by making it 2-0 minutes later from the penalty spot.

A rash challenge by Sam Sheen saw the spot-kick awarded which was put away by Danny Bartle.

Boss Dunn tried to change things around by bringing on Adam Weston and Jamie Harkness for Luke J Edwards and Rigby.

However, Sandbach only went on and increased their lead after 77 minutes, Bartle the marksman once again as he smashed home a loose ball inside the area after goalkeeper Mottram flapped at a corner.

Late on Joe Fielding was introduced for Tom Mitchell while Towey saw a fine header brilliantly saved by United’s goalkeeper Ryan Moss denying Widnes a consolation goal on what was a forgettable night.
