Birchfield do find rich pickings in Goldmine to secure the silverware

IN the Widnes & District Darts League on Friday evening, the latter stages of the Martindale Cup took place at the Mersey Hotel.

In the first semi-final, the Majors Arms faced the Birchfield.

Ian Sharples took the first game for the Birchfield.

Stu Flanaghan levelled for the Majors before Andy O’Grady took them ahead.

The Birchfield came back to level via Keith Allen & Dave Herley before going ahead through Trevor Chadwick & Ian Sharples (14 darts).

Once again, the Majors levelled, this time through Mark France & Tony O’Grady.

The Birchfield rallied, taking two in a row via Trevor Chadwick (19 darts) and Robbie Baxter to secure the win.

With the match already in the bag for the Birchfield, it was no consolatio­n to the Majors when Mark France took the final game.

In the second semi-final, the Mersey Hotel took on the Goldmine.

The Mersey’s Rob Cotty and Dom McLachlan secured the first two games.

The Goldmine’s Adam Durbin and Peter Mullally & Adam Mullally then levelled the score.

They then stormed ahead taking a further four games through Jimmy Holden & John Taylor, Adam Durbin & Sean Bell (17 darts), John Taylor and Adam Mullally and Peter Mullally to book their spot in the final.

In the final, the Birchfield started well winning the first three games via Trevor Chadwick, Robbie Baxter and Dave Herley.

The Goldmine recovered a point through Peter Mullally & Adam Mullally.

But that was good as it got for them as the Birchfield claimed the remaining five games to win the silverware with Keith Allen & Dave Herley (17 darts), Trevor Chadwick & Ian Sharples, Keith Allen, Ian Sharples and Jon Leather all successful at the oche. ● More reports from the other finals played on Friday night and all the latest from the Widnes Bowling Club 501 League played last Monday evening on pages 58 and 59.
