● A WIDNES care home that supports people with complex learning disabilities was named as a finalist at an awards ceremony.

Glenwood Care Home in Liverpool Road was shortlisted at the Laing Buisson Awards in the specialist care category.

The ceremony was held at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel in London on Thursday, November 29, and was hosted by writer, broadcaster and former MP Gyles Brandreth.

The home – which supports 10 people – now has its own Widnes Vikings themed area and the peo- ple supported take part in weekly accessible sports sessions run by club’s coaches and have received special match day experiences.

The home was also supported by volunteers from British Gas, who helped create accessible gardens and complete a £100,000 refurbishment.

Glenwood Care Home service manager Karen Hayes said: “We are so delighted to be finalists at the Laing Buisson Awards.

“It was a huge shock to be nominated and I’m so proud of all the hard work our staff have done – and continue to do – to improve the lives of the people we support.”

“We have had incredible opportunities this year. Our residents’ heroes at Widnes Vikings have visited our home, they’ve had VIP treatment at match days and other events.

“We’ve also had the support of our local community in making sure that the people we support enjoy the best possible life experiences.”

The Laing Buisson Awards recognise excellence and innovation in public, private and third sector health and care services.
