Police fine 90 drivers for using phone

-

NINETY fines were issued to drivers who were caught using a handheld mobile phone during a recent county-wide crackdown.

Cheshire police took part in a national weeklong operation targeting motorists who used phones while behind the wheel.

So far this year, up until the start of November, officers in the county had issued more than 2,100 tickets.

Insp Steve Griffiths from Cheshire police said: “This operation was not just about issuing tickets, it was also about educating motorists about the dangers of using a mobile phone while driving to help prevent tragedies occurring.

“Whilst it’s disappointing to see that so many people believe driving whist using a handheld device is acceptable, I hope that the results from this operation will act as a warning to other motorists, reaffirming the fact that action will be taken against anyone who breaks the law.

“The 90 motorists who were caught during this operation will receive £100 fines and three penalty points on their driving licences, which will ulti- mately lead to an increase in their car insurance premiums, and for some of them it may even result in the loss of their driving licence, and even their job.”

He added: “My advice is simple: if you’re driving a car, concentrate on the road and not your mobile phone.

“It could be the difference between life and death.”
