Trekkers out to fund new legs for Poppy

THE heartbreaking tale of a disabled puppy abandoned to die has inspired the Widnes man who found her to take on a 30-mile walk to raise cash towards the operation to mend the pup’s legs.

Springer spaniel pup Poppy was dumped on a cold and windy night, but her life changed forever when she was found and adopted by Dean and Joanne Edge.

They believe someone must have abandoned her because of her deformed front legs.

Dean and Joanne embraced their life as her adoptive owners and started a mission to raise the funds to pay for surgery to correct her condition.

They have already collected more than £5,000 towards their £7,500 target.

The couple first took Poppy to the emergency vets at Rutland House, then Widnes Vets4Pets referred her to top orthopaedic surgeons in Surrey.

Poppy’s story is now to feature in Channel 4 hit show The Supervet, having attracted the interest of TV and animal fans’ favourite Noel Fitzpatrick.

The biggest fundraising feat was completed on Sunday as Dean, with friends Billy Isherwood, Shaun Cood, Stephen Lightfoot and Reese Edge, conquered the 30-mile Sandstone Trail through Cheshire.

Halton MP Derek Twigg had wished them luck on their quest in an event the day before at Select Security Stadium.

Updates on the Poppy’s New Legs fundraising page have also hinted that fortunes could be turning for the pup and the future looks bright with more operations to come.

In the most recent post, Dean ● Dean Edge, Billy Isherwood, Shaun Codd, Stephen Lightfoot t and Reese Edge on their fundraising trek said: “We have had a few calls from the vets and surgical team this week and pleased to say that so far Poppy’s surgery and recovery has gone well.

“Things are healing nicely and things are pointing in the right direction for the first time.”
