Geraghty pulls off a fine ‘trick
Widnes Colts 29 Wirral Colts 17 WIDNES Senior Colts U18s welcomed Conference B pacesetters Wirral to Heath Road in the Raging Bull Colts League.
They started Sunday’s encounter brightly and were rewarded when quick hands led to Matty Geraghty stepping inside to score a try in the corner.
Soon after some more good work sent the wing in for his second fivepointer of the match successfully converted by Andy Owen.
Wirral got back into the game with an unconverted try in the corner, but solid defence kept the Widnes line intact for the remainer of the period and they went in at the break 12-5 to the good.
The visitors continued to press at the start of the second half but some top defence from Jack Jolley and Johnny Cook kept the line secure.
Widnes broke away and some aggressive forward work turned the ball over and the backs made space for Geraghty to complete his second hat-trick of the season. Owen again added the extras.
Wirral came straight back and strong forward play led to a converted try to bring the score to 19-12.
Owen then stretched the Widnes lead with a booming penalty from the left touchline.
The home side went further ahead when some quick passing created an overlap for Will Johnson to cross the line for a try by the posts which Owen successfully converted.
Wirral scored again with just two minutes to go to complete the scoring but this was Widnes’s day.
This was a real team performance and every Widnes player gave their all to help secure the fine victory.
Hat-trick man Matty Geraghty picked up the man-of-the-match award pressed closely by teammates Jack Jolley and George McGarvey who also put in super shifts in the contest. ●
