Halton schoolchildren hit the target as kurling contest is a big success
THE Halton New Age Kurling Competition is an inclusive primary schools event providing pupils with the opportunity to represent their school in a fun competitive sporting event.
Not only was the focus based on competition but also increasing participation and ensuring teamwork and fair play was adhered to and the pupils had a fun and enjoyable experience engaging a lifelong interest in taking part in physical activity.
Each school taking part in the event provided a mixed team of eight pupils ranging in age from Reception to Year 6.
The event was delivered by Halton School Games Organiser, Karen Drake, in partnership with Sts Peter & Paul Catholic College, Widnes, who provided the venue and sports leaders who played a vital role in the delivery of the event by officiating the matches.
Schools taking part were Spinney Avenue CE Primary (Widnes), The Grange (Runcorn), St Bede’s Catholic Junior (Widnes), Beechwood Primary (Runcorn), Gorsewood Primary (Runcorn), St Basil’s Primary (Widnes), St Mary’s CE Primary (Runcorn), Farnworth CE Primary (Widnes), Astmoor Primary (Runcorn), Widnes Academy (Widnes) and St Michael’s Catholic Primary (Widnes).
Following round robin fixtures in the group stages, a final was played between St Basil’s and Widnes Academy the top teams from each group.
In the end, Widnes Academy were crowned overall winners and will represent Halton at a Merseyside School Games Final next year.
All the children taking part and the sports leaders were presented with a special certificate of participation.
The winners and runners-up teams were also presented with a trophy and a medal each. ● Players representing Widnes Academy celebrate winning the Halton New Age Kurling Competition.
