Rights charity expecting to help 600 people as debt aftermath of Xmas begins

-

A RIGHTS charity is expecting to help more than 600 Widnes and Runcorn residents over the next two months as the debt aftermath of the festive season kicks in.

Hitesh Patel, Citizens Advice Halton chief executive, said the start of 2017 is expected to be one of the busiest times, with analysis of past years showing January and February having more queries about finances with someone viewing the online advice pages every three seconds in January.

Across the country, Citizens Advice is expected to be approached by more than 370,000 clients seeking help on issues such as pensions, investments and debts.

Although associated with debt, the research showed the time of year is also used to take stock of personal finances.

Demand is predicted to peak on January 12.

Citizens Advice website hits doubled on that date in 2016.

Issues more likely to be investigated in January include pensions, ways to save cash, investments, joint bank accounts and vehicle insurance, and queries to Citizens advice are most likely to focus on personal pensions, bank accounts and credit referencing, while those with debts need help with council tax arrears, credit card debts and debt relief orders.

Mr Patel said: “January and February are our busiest months of the year and here in Halton we expect to help over 600 people.

“Although debt worries can be more acute in January people are also taking stock of their finances and thinking about the future.

“It doesn’t matter what your earn – whether you are on minimum wage or have a comfortable salary – everyone can benefit from reviewing their finances.

“Considering your overall financial situation can help you find a solution for urgent problems, and start planning your finances so that you are better prepared for tomorrow and more financially secure in the long term.

“If you’d like to understand more about how your circumstances affect your money options or are struggling with debt, Citizens Advice Halton can give you the information and advice you need to find a way forward.”
