‘B’ team edge out their ‘C’ side rivals to retain the John Smith’s Cup
THE final showdown in the Widnes Domino League’s third competition of the year – the John Smith’s Cup – was hosted by sponsors Hough Green Social Club and featured a local derby with Hough Green ‘C’ playing against rivals Hough Green ‘B’.
The ‘B’ team won the drop, and their pairing of Chris Flanagan and Dick Burke playing against John Barrow and Derek Olson attempted to give themselves the best possible start.
However, it was to no avail, with the ‘C’ team lads convincing winners by 2-0.
Next to the table came the ‘C’ team’s Ken Hill and Mal Sutton trying to keep the early momentum going.
They were paired against Ken Woodstock and Sue Woodstock.
The ‘B’ team gained revenge by winning 2-0.
The game was evenly poised when brothers Arthur Williams and Barry Williams from the ‘C’ team were paired against Bill Smith and George McNaughton.
The siblings were given little chance when the ‘B’ team pair won by the same 2-0 scoreline.
After a short break for refreshments and team talks it was the turn of the ‘C’ team to put the pressure back on their ‘B’ team rivals.
However, their efforts came to nought when the ‘B’ outfit’s John Hiscock and Ken Smith blanked Norman Smith and Ted Andrews winning their game without losing a leg thus ensuring the side retained the silverware.
The League wishes to thank resident referees Andy Hutchison and Tony White for their officiating and to Hough Green Social Club for the buffet and continuing sponsorship of the contest. ● ●
