VOLUNTEERS WANTED

- Roy Clark Director of retail & trading Barnardo’s Emily Sivyer

WE’D like to urge your readers to make a New Year’s resolution to become part of a team that helps support vulnerable children in this area.

As the UK’s leading children’s charity, we at Barnardo’s are looking for people to volunteer in our stores and help us raise money to support our local projects that work with disadvantaged children, young people and their families.

By giving us a little of your spare time, you will gain invaluable experience that could provide a stepping stone to a new career or an opportunity to add to your personal statement for college or university.

Volunteering is also a great way to build confidence, meet new people and an opportunity to try new things.

Our volunteers – who are all ages and come from all walks of life – are given full training and ongoing support.

To find out more about volunteering with Barnardo’s, please pop into your local Barnardo’s store or visit the website at www.barnardos.org.uk/ volunteering

Thank you, we look forward to meeting you in 2017! ● mark the 50th anniversary of the Sexual Offences Act 1967.

Through this film, we want to tell the story of gay men throughout this country during the 20th century.

Did you suffer prejudice or prosecution because of your sexuality, before or after the 1967 law was passed?

Were you one of the victims of the age of consent laws which meant that young gay men could be prosecuted for having sex below the age of 21 – and later 18 – whereas it was legal for everyone else? Did you live in fear of being caught?

Did you have to leave your job or were you dishonourably discharged from the Armed Forces?

Were you affected by Section 28? Did you have a positive or negative experience of coming out, or did you feel like you couldn’t reveal your sex- uality? Was your relationship with your family, or your faith, affected? Were you forced to endure aversion therapy?

Despite everything, did you remain defiant and get involved in campaigns to change people attitudes and the law? In what ways did you fight for your rights?

How did more liberal attitudes and equal rights for gays over the past 50 years change and enrich your life?

If you have a story to share we would love to hear from you.

Please contact Pete Vance or Emily Sivyer on 0117 925 8589 or at pete. vance@testimonyfilms.com or emily. sivyer@testimonyfilms.com

In the UK, we had the EU referendum with 17.4m voting to leave; and in the US, Donald Trump won their elections to become the next President.

There are elections in both France and Germany this year and, following the Brexit and Trump votes, the clear message to the old establishment is that the people have had enough of them and are demanding real change.

In Britain, and despite the Brexit vote, the Government are still not listening to the people and are carrying on as per normal – council tax rises, massive business rates rises, railway fair increases, defence cuts and the greenbelt under threat.

Yet we are still handing out over £13bn in overseas aid each year (and set to rise)!

Many in our Government are stuck in their ways, just as they are in
