Pub punters pile up the pounds for foundation

BIG-HEARTED pub punters in Widnes heaped on the donations for an impromptu body waxing feat that raised nearly £450 for a charity dedicated to the memory of a rugby star’s mother.

Regulars at The Crows Nest in Halton View were happy to part with their cash in aid of the Cathie Stankevitch Foundation (CSF) after customer Rob Dean opted to brave the pain and volunteered to have his body stripped of hair.

Drinkers played their part by applying the wax to Rob’s chest, thighs and eyebrows.

Former Widnes Viking and foundation founder John Stankevitch said the pain took its toll but was not in vain, raising cash for the ReSport Halton Project to be launched on February 1.

Rob’s courage meant almost £450 was raised for the scheme, which will give disadvantaged children and young people the chance to take part in sport, which can otherwise be out of reach for hard-pressed families.

John said the foundation was ‘incredibly grateful’ to landlords Keith and Allison Roberts and staff for their support.

Keith said: “The pub was packed out and we saw an opportunity to raise some additional funds for John and the Cathie Stankevitch Foundation. I have seen just how much work John has put into establishing the charity in memory of his mum this year, and as a pub we want to support the work that the charity is doing for local people.

“The waxing wasn’t planned at all and it just seemed to come out of nowhere, but Rob Dean who was the sacrificial lamb for the night, was happy to lose a bit of hair, although wasn’t too happy to suffer the pain. But it was all for a fantastic local cause and all of my regulars had a good laugh at Rob’s expense.

“He was a great sport though”.
