A mission to avenge LSH loss

-

AFTER an enforced three week absence, Widnes RUFC’s first XV are back in action – weather permitting of course – with a home game against local rivals Liverpool St Helens at Heath Road.

The ‘Moss Laners’ have been in great form so far, and they were able to take full advantage of the inactivity of some teams last weekend to leapfrog Douglas and go top of the table courtesy of their victory over Glossop who face the Wids next weekend in a re-arranged fixture.

In the last meeting between the teams back in October, the home side just edged it but had to rely on time running out to finally extinguish what would have been a Widnes comeback of almost epic proportions.

In the end the Merseysiders edged Widnes 38-33 after the visitors trailed by 26 points with only five minutes remaining in the contest.

If this game is only half as exciting as that one, then the supporters of both clubs are in for a treat. The game kicks-off at 2.15pm. ● As the only senior side in action last weekend, Widnes’s third-team failed in their big audition, losing their previously unbeaten record 29-5 at Helsby who gained revenge for their defeat at Prescot Road a week earlier.

Despite the loss, the side are still firmly in control at the top of Division Five West and should be too good for bottom side Mossley Hill who they face this weekend. ● The Wids U9s had a good day winning both of their games against Liverpool Collegiate and West Park. Despite the freezing cold conditions, they finished strongly in the first contest against Collegiate, before comfortably seeing off hosts West Park.

Tries came from Lennon King, Jack Mather, Ben Sibson, Matthew Hughes, Louis Favour and Jake Winstanley who was also man-of-the-match.
