THE founder of Runcorn- based LPW Technology Ltd has been picked for a key tole on the advisory board of a £20m Government-backed initiative.

Dr Phil Carroll, now LPW chief executive, will share his expertise for the Future Manufacturing Hub In Manufacture Using Advanced Powder Processes (MAPP).

MAPP has been created to support UK businesses to maximise the potential of 3D printing technologies.

LPW will be well placed having established its place as a market leader in the development, processing and supply of high-quality metal powders and software solutions for 3D printing.

Dr Carroll was approached to chair MAPP’s industrial advisory board, which is led by the University Of Sheffield and funded by the Engineering And Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

One of eight research hubs exploring and improving manufacturing techniques, MAPP will support the UK’s manufacturing base to capitalise on the opportunities powder pro- ● cesses have to offer, translating advancing technologies into practical solutions for industries such as aerospace, energy and biomedical.

Dr Carroll delivered a presentation on LPW’s vision at MAPP’s official launch event at Sheffield University at the end of January.

MAPP will work with academic, commercial and innovation partners to drive the research needed to address the challenges limiting the development and uptake of powder-based pro- cesses.

Dr Carroll said: “It’s an accolade not only for the company, but also for our highly-qualified team, that LPW’s innovation and expertise in the field of metal powders has been recognised with the opportunity to contribute to this project.

“LPW’s commitment to the research and development from the perspective of the metal powder directly complements MAPP’s vision to deliver new powderbased manufacturing processes that will pro- vide low energy, low cost and low waste manufacturing routes and products for industry.

“We’re excited to be contributing to a forward-looking project that has the potential to transform our manufacturing base.”
