HEARTFELT tributes have been paid to a former Runcorn Linnets Juniors footballer who has passed away aged just 18 following a short illness.

Luke Mackrell died at Halton Haven Hospice on Wednesday, February 22, after being diagnosed with a brain tumour 11 days earlier.

Luke – a former St Chad’s High School pupil – had been with the Linnets Juniors from their time as Inter Union JFC.

He had stayed with the team’s under 10s until his run in the junior age groups ended with the under 16s.

Not only was he noted as a talented left-sided midfield player but he also played in other positions, including goalkeeper many times.

Luke’s manager during his time with Linnets Steve McKenna, junior section committee members, coaches and former team-mates have paid tribute to Luke.

They have described him as an excellent allround footballer with a very likeable, infectious and inspirational personality.

Linnets Juniors head secretary Ciaran Clotwothy said: “We are all absolutely devastated at Luke’s very unexpected passing and the loss of a lovely lad.

“No-one ever had a bad word to say about him.

“In fact, Luke was known as the lad who would lift your spirits when you needed it.”

After leaving the Linnets, Luke continued his career with Smiths SD and again proved to be an important and influential team member sharing in a league and cup double.

As a mark of respect, a minute’s applause will be held in Luke’s memory before kick-off of the Linnets’ next first-team game at home to Ashton Athletic on Saturday, March 4, at the Millbank Linnets Stadium.

Poignant online tributes to the young player said: “He hit up the room with his jokes and never failed to make people laugh. He wasn’t just a mate, he was like a brother – the boys won’t be the same without him.”

His funeral service will be at Our Lady’s Church in Palacefields on Thursday, March 9, at 10am.

A club spokesman added: “All connected with Runcorn Linnets send deepest sympathies and condolences to Luke’s family.” ●
