YOUNG people from Runcorn and Widnes have received a visit from speakers from the Amy Winehouse Foundation.

The groups heard life testimonies from speakers in recovery from addiction courtesy of the organisers, Runcornbased training provider Power In Partnership.

The Amy Winehouse Foundation was launched by the singer’s father Mitch after her tragic death in 2011.

Power In Partnership (PIP) works with 16-24 year olds who are not in employment, education or training (NEET) and aims to help them to develop their skills and life chances.

A PIP spokeswoman quoted research by The Prince’s Trust that said one in 10 young people feel they cannot cope with day-to-day life. NEETs are more than twice as likely to feel that way and 22% of young people did not have someone to talk to about their problems while growing up with NEETs more affected.

A recent report by The Prince’s Trust concluded that PIP’s training model links councils, colleges, community groups and businesses to promote a sense of ownership and pride in themselves and their neighbourhoods.

Claire Bradbury, chief executive, said: “The term NEET can itself be stigmatising and we work with some of the hardest to engage and vulnerable young people, such as those in care or care leavers, young offenders, single parents and those with behavioural or learning issues. “We believe every person has skills and talents to offer and our learning ethos is not like that of traditional colleges and schools.

“We understand that many of our learners have had a poor experience of education and may not have the exams or the experience to find work easily.

“We work one-to-one with students and tailor the courses around their own needs.

“PIP encourage young people to aim high for themselves and to think positively about what skills they may already have and new ones they can develop.” ●
