Bowls to help OAPs keep fit

-

THE Older But Wiser group is launching weekly indoor bowls sessions at The Heath Business And Technical Park in Runcorn.

The organisation, formed by business advisor Alan McKie in 2012 to encourage more activity among residents in their more advanced years, has been staging regular tea dances at The Heath with the support of the business park’s owner John Lewis, SOG Group managing director.

Now businessman Sam Evans, of Widnes, has donated bowls and mats so the group can stage bowls instruction courses.

The bowls programme will be launched on Wednesday, March 22, with a free taster session from 11am until 2pm.

There will be tea and biscuits provided and participants can also dine in The Heath’s restaurant at preferential rates.

The sessions will then be staged each Wednesday with a small fee to cover entry and the cost of bowls tuition.

Mr McKie said: “Our new ‘short-mat’ bowls instruction courses are a simple activity to help people’s fitness through the winter months.

“We are also inviting people with a disability to join us on a complimentary basis as bowling is something that people who are wheelchair bound can also do for exercise and enjoyment.”

Mr McKie said he was grateful to Mr Lewis, Mr Evans and Halton Borough Council for supporting his Older But Wiser initiative.

Lesley Lunt, The Heath Business And Technical Park’s sales and marketing manager, said: “The Heath provides space for many community functions for young people such as cubs and scouts to senior citizens attending the popular Older But Wiser Tea Dances.

“The bowls are another addition to the activities available here and ● underpin our support of community activities.”
