Goldmine dig out a vital win

-

ON Friday evening in the Widnes & District Darts League, matches in Division Two of the Mill Brow SC RTB League were played.

The Goldmine at home to the Birchfield, saw two teams needing the win to keep promotion ambitions alive. After the first opening games of singles, it was the Birchfield who held the upper hand with Dave Hurley and Carl Bryan making it two for the Birchfield and one to the Goldmine through Barry Noonan. However in the pairs, a clean sweep for the Goldmine via John Taylor & Sean Bell, Ray O’Connor & Barry Noonan and Tim Hunt & Peter Mullally reversed the fortunes. Back in the singles, John Taylor added to the Goldmine total to ensure victory.

Ian Sharples and Alan Rigby made the scoreline respectable but the loss left them four points behind the leaders.

Hough Green struggled at home against title hopefuls Widnes Cricket Club, falling two behind as Rob Morris took the opener, and Billy Cain adding to the visitors’ tally with a 16 darter. Keith Glover narrowed the gap but in the pairs, wins from Ste Heesom & Dean Morris and Ben Hewitt & Billy Webb left the Cricket lads in the driving seat. The final game of pairs saw Russ Hardman & Duane Lawton stave of defeat, but back in the singles, Danny Mellor and Dean Morris won leaving Widnes Cricket Club joint-top of the league. Russ Hardman took the final game for the hosts.

The Majors Arms at home to the Mersey Hotel, had a right old ding-dong match. Dave Cotty put the visitors ahead but Andy O’Grady stepped in for the Majors to level. Paul Cotty restored the Mersey’s advantage, but opening pair Mark France & Lewis McPartland made it all-square again. At the end of the pairs it was still level as Danny Shipley & Lisa Cotty for the Mersey saw Luke Carey & Nicky Duff cancel out the visitors’ lead again. In the final round of singles Mark France gave the Majors the lead, but a riposte from John Cotty for the Mersey left the match all hanging on the final game. With two valuable points at stake, Daz Attwood stepped up to give the Majors the win.
