Pressure on Ladies after loss

-

Whitchurch Ladies I 3

Runcorn Ladies I 2 IT was a tale of two halves this week for Runcorn Ladies’ firstteam as they made the long trip to Whitchurch.

Runcorn dominated the opening half and it was not long before they took the lead from a penalty corner.

Steph Woodstock injected the ball to Karen Jones who took the initial shot which Woodstock deflected in to open the scoring.

Runcorn’s second goal of the game came after Lauren Bradshaw passed to Woodstock on the right who in turn found Jones free in the circle for her to slot the ball past the Whitchurch keeper.

Runcorn had further chances to add to their tally but were unable to take any of them. ●

Just before the half-time whistle Whitchurch scored their opening goal of the game and the period finished 2-1 in the visitors’ favour.

The start of the second half saw Whitchurch have the better of the attacking chances, but Jo Fisher and her defence frustrated them and they could not find an early equaliser.

The pressure was to take its toll, however, and the unfortunate Ali Ritchie deflected a Whitchurch shot into her own goal to level up the contest at 2-2.

Runcorn almost regained the lead when Gill Peacock came close to scoring.

Both teams looked to find the winning goal and it was Whitchurch who managed to apply the killer blow and the game finished 3-2.

Player-of-the-match honours went to Jo Fisher for her outstanding display in the Runcorn goal.

With only three games remaining in the season, Runcorn’s promotion hopes look to be going down to the wire as the teams below them have closed the gap to just three points.
