Grot-busters thanked

-

APLATOON of volunteers rolled up their sleeves and grabbed their litter pickers to give Runcorn’s Murdishaw estate a spring clean.

More than 20 civicminded residents turned out for the event, organised by Liverpool Housing Trust (LHT) as part of the national Great British Spring Clean campaign.

The group, which included staff from Liverpool Housing Trust’s (LHT) Jigsaw Neighbourhood Solutions unit, Assist Solutions and Runcorn police, amassed 60 bags of rubbish and other larger fly-tipped items in three hours.

The national campaign was organised by Keep Britain Tidy, which hoped to encourage half a million participants to clean up the neighbourhoods where they live.

An LHT spokesman said the campaign, backed by wildlife presenter Steve Backshall and groups such as the Women’s ● Institute and RSPCA, has resulted in the biggest resident-led clean-up the country has ever seen.

James Dean, Jigsaw Neighbourhood Solutions environmental officer, said: “The Great British Spring Clean is a fantastic campaign which we are delighted to be supporting.

“It was great to see so many volunteers spare a few hours to get outdoors and pick up some of the litter that can blight our neighbourhood.

“I’d like to thank all the volunteers, who take real pride in their community and want to make Murdishaw a cleaner place to live.”
