● three and four vehicles.

A Mersey Gateway Crossings Board spokesman said that though there are no immediate plans to do so, a review of bridge tolls after three years could consider the issue at that point.

The spokesman said: “The Mersey Gateway Project will mean quicker, easier and more reliable journeys for all drivers across the river in Halton and businesses using the new bridge will be able to save considerable time due to reduced congestion in the area.

“The details of the tolling arrangements and discounts for the project were set out in detail at the public inquiry back in 2009 and then signed off by the UK Government.

“There are no immediate plans to introduce monthly passes for other classes of vehicles.

“However, as part of the wider man- agement arrangements for the project there will be a three-year review looking at toll levels across the board and issues such as this would be considered at that point.

“Representatives from the project team will be working with WSR to identify their best options under the agreed tolling scheme.”
